Will Teams work on my computer / phone / tablet?

Microsoft Teams can run on any device via the web browser: Simply go to https://teams.microsoft.com. There are also dedicated apps and software clients for Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS that may offer more functions. We have installation guides available on the right hand side of this page, but all these apps/software can be downloaded from https://products.office.com/en-gb/microsoft-teams/download-app. If you use a Chromebook, please use the web browser and not the dedicated app. Safari is not currently supported (see more), so we would recommend you use another option above on a Mac, or download the Teams dedicated app.

Which web browsers are supported?

Microsoft Teams app works with Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Edge (Chromium, latest version), the latest version of Google Chrome and the latest version of Firefox. What are my logon details to Teams?

All staff and students should use their usual school computer username and password, but use @carmel.org.uk at the end of their username.

Something is not working as expected, what basic troubleshooting steps can I take?

Try signing out, closing everything down, logon and try again. Try using a different device (laptop / tablet etc) or a different web browser (Google Chrome / Microsoft Edge), or you could use the dedicated app. If you are using an Apple mobile phone, make sure you have the latest version of the Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Office apps installed. If you are using an android mobile, there is specific guidance for students in the install guide that you will need to follow, but you may find it easier to use another device.

I’m trying to upload pictures of my work to an assignment but it will not allow me to add the all the work.

There is a limit of 10 files being submitted in an assignment. You could share the pictures in a chat or email to your teacher instead.

I can’t hand in my work to an assignment, what should I do?

How do I manage notifications in Teams?

Manage notifications in Teams by clicking your profile picture, Settings > Notifications. On this screen you can select how you receive notifications for various activities in Teams. You can also manage channel notifications individually by clicking the ellipsis (…) on a channel, then clicking Channel notifications. Here you can choose how to receive notifications for this specific channel. Notifications in the mobile app are separate from the web or desktop client. Users should receive mobile notifications 3 minutes after being away from Teams (after the computer is locked or in sleep mode). I have problems editing PDFs in Teams?

PDFs cannot be modified or collaborative edited. Files and app types which support direct editing, as well as collaborative editing include: Powerpoint, Word, Sway and Forms

How do I make sure people in a team (class) or channel see my message?

The best way is to @mention them. Type @ before someone’s name and they will get a notification. To get the attention of an entire channel, type @channel before your message and the channel will receive notifications. To get the attention of the entire team, type @team before your message and all your teammates / class will receive notifications.

Can each channel have different members?

Users have the option of creating private channels in Teams, where they can add individual Team members (students). Otherwise, all standard channels are accessible by all Team members (students in the team) by default. More information on private channels can be found on the Microsoft Teams documentation site.

How do I submit work “on behalf” of a student to an assignment?

It is not currently possible to submit work on behalf of the student to an assignment. You can submit feedback to Microsoft for them to add this feature here

Student’s can’t hand in work to an assignment, what do I do.

Please ask students to follow the basic troubleshooting steps (shown earlier) and direct them this help page. There is also a maximum of 10 files that can be submitted by one student to an assignment, therefore if students are trying to attach many photos this will not work. Ask the student to email / message you instead. If they still have difficulty it is important to get as much detail as possible about WHY they cannot hand-in the work, so asking them what device / browser they are using, or for a screenshot can help point them in the right direction. Is there a way to see all assignments at a glance?

You can see all assignments at a glance and know who has turned them in and who has not for all assignments by student. Go to Grades tab under General and it’s easy to check all the assignments. Blank means not turned in yet.

Can I make phone calls in Teams?

No. However, Teams has audio and video conferencing capabilities like Skype.

My camera is rotated 90 degrees, how do I change it?

There is no rotate setting and it should automatically set the correct orientation. If you are using a mobile or tablet, it should just be a case of rotating your device. If you are using a windows computer, we have seen reports that using Microsoft Edge can cause this with certain devices. Please try downloading the dedicated app, or using a different web browser such as Google Chrome. Other suggestions can be found on this forum post.

What is a Rubric Function and how do I create one for my assignments?

Rubrics are a powerful tool used to assess students’ work. The criterion helps students to have a concrete understanding and visualisation of what they need to do to achieve a particular score. Each criterion also includes a gradation scale of quality. They can be created and reused across Teams making it a powerful time saving tool for teachers while at the same time helping students understand how to succeed in the assignment.
